Once again I am learning just how much I do not know. I made several attempts at purchasing a block to start the build only to find that there is a lot to learn just about what block to build and that there is a lot of misinformation out there on what block is the correct block to use.
I did not start this page soon enough to give you all the details leading up to the current day. I will do so from this point on.
I have also purchased a 8-71 Little Field Blower, retro, pie cut, high helix with strips, which include an injector hat and bird catcher.
This was the first block purchased. It was an 1969 GTO WT block. I proudly presented it to the world (through the internet) only to be told that I should look for under cutting of the oil pan rail and main bearing journals. Which I did and found that they were undercut. |

So I went looking for another suitable block and found a Ram Air III bloclk that is a twin to the stroker engine I built. To see that build start HERE |

This block was not in as nice condition as the first one was. It had been sitting for awhile and had a fair amount of rust on it. First step was to pressure check the block and next was to nock the rust of in the cylinders with the hone to make sure the cylinders could be bored out to get rid of all rust pitting. It was found that the rust pitts can be eliminated by boring 30 over. I actually considered purchasing a IA II aftermarket block, but can not afford the $3,000 price tag. The block will be bored after the mains are line bored and honed |

So On to the new caps and line boring the mains. This was done with a machine that was made in the 50’s. It was purchased “new” from e-bay for $2,500. it is amazing what can be found on “Fee-Bay” |

Oh yes, I purchased billet steel Pro-Gram center an main caps to replace the stock cast caps We found that the center caps fit great, but that the holes for the dowels on the end caps were too large and did not provide the “fitment” needed to center the end caps. The holes in the caps are larger than .313. We will be putting the block into the mill to enlarge the bowel holes in the block to fit oversized dowels. That should happen later this week. | |
Ok, I have skipped a bunch of stuff, but this brings us up to date. On another front, I am looking into intake manifolds. I believe that there is only one manufacture at this point (BDS-8607) which can be purchased through RBS Superchargers for $525 (Good Vibrations has it for $548) but is only 2.6 inches tall. NHRA requires a burst panel and I am afraid with the 2.6 inch height there will not be enough room to weld in a burst panel.
What are you guys using for intakes and burst panels? |
