Driving lights work the opposite of fog lights.Fog lights tend to be low power broad (wide) beam with little height to be used in fog and light the area directly in front of their location, usually in conjunction with the low beam of a headlight.Driving lights tend to be high power concentrated beam of light used to light objects a long way away, and used in conjunction with your high beam. Laws are different from state to state on use of either fog or driving lights. All my lights are set up with relays and wired directly to the battery positive and grounds. They are very bright and worth the effort to do this

I wanted the ability to have the covers on the driving lights and still use my high beams, With the way it was wired if I turned the high beams on and the covers on the driving lights the driving lights would com on inside the covers, they generate a lot of heat and I have seen many covers melted because of this.

On of the ironic part of this install was one of the first things I did when I got the Jeep was to remove a switch the original owner had installed.

It was a terrible install with hot wires being run through the fire wall without grommets

It now looks like this (and uses an original Jeep Fog Light switch)

The real story is the journey I took to get here  I want to keep the Jeep as original as possible so I posted a thread on there this switch would have been located              http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f8/original-fog-light-switch-location-1875658/     It turned out there could have been as many as three switches controlling lights from the factory. http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f8/original-fog-light-switch-location-1875658/index4.html#post18628394    1) Standard Headlight switch
2) Factory Fog light switch (under dash)
3) Off Road lights switch (installed just below and to the right of the headlight switch)
switch_small I ran a poll and currently it sits at 8 to use the original fog light switch in the original position
untitled_small to 6 to use an alternate location which would have been used for lights mounted to the windshield.
fog light switch wiring_small Ok simple enough, well not really.  It was pointed out by John Strenk that the factory Service manual would have the switch wired so that the indicator light would be on whenever power was available to operate the fog lights (switch in either the on or off position.

However when I test wired it like the manual
Red with the white strip is the ground
Blue is the switched hot
Gray with the black strip is the hot feed.  The indicator light would be on when the driving lights were one (test light)
 DSC_3170_small
And off when the driving lights were off
That was good for me but raise the question of what the service manual was saying.    If I reversed the feed and the switch legs it work the way the manual said it should (indicator light stayed on when ever there was power on the feed wire regardless of the switch position (on or off).   with the
Red with the white strip as the ground
Blue as the switched hot
Gray with the black strip as the hot feed.   The light in the switch goes off and on with the switched leg on the switch   with
Red with the white strip as the ground
Blue as as the hot feed
Gray with the black strip as the switched hot.

The light in the switch stays on when every there is power applied to the blue terminal regardless of what position the switch is in (on or off). The test light only comes on when the switch is in the on position. This is the reverse of the way the wiring diagram says it should work.

So I elected to install it so that the indicator light was on when the driving lights would be on.Ok, the switch is in the Jeep.

It functions the way I wanted it to (indicator light on when the driving lights are on)     I covered the headlights up so that if you look at the wall in front of the Jeep you can tell if the lights are on.

The indicator is off when the driving lights are off.

Interesting note is after all the testing to find out how to hook it up so that it would work this way, didn’t I hook it up so that the indicator light was on all the time!!!!!! I did take it back apart and fixed it the way I wanted it.
Some goodies arrived yesterday.

First up was testing the mercury switch in the bulb fixture to see if it worked, it did.

Next up was to clean it up as best I could, it did not come out to bad.

This is all original CJ-7 stuff, this just happens to be the under hood light. The holes in the hood were already there. The screws and clips are also original

I tried to put the same twist in the wire that was shown in one of the previous pictures of a stock installation.

Ok, I can now count myself in the club that must disconnect their under hood light if you are going to leave the hood open.
Well I spent 10 minutes in the garage tonight and put the under dash lights in.    These are original CJ lights screws and wire clips.    I did not know where the clips were supposed to go so I just guessed.
